Leap And The Net Will Appear

We are women in our 50’s. This is mid-life, a time that brings many changes. Recently we have found that many of our female peers and friends find themselves suddenly kicked to the curb. These women, who have worked faithfully at companies for years, and worked their way up the corporate ladder, are now considered redundant. One former colleague told us that at her company, in the downsizing process, they eliminated 29 women, and one man.

Just at the age when they were beginning to consider the idea of retirement, these women are forced to start all over again. Most of the exit packages (if they were lucky enough to receive one) will not be enough to see them through.

Forbes is in the process of putting together a feature on 50 women in their 50’s who are and have created amazing new companies.

Perhaps rather than being “washed up” they are blazing a trail that will inspire generations of women behind them. This is a leap year. Maybe it’s time to make that big leap.

It will require courage. The courage to reinvent yourself. The courage to see this as a gift. The courage to know this is not an end, but an exciting new beginning. The courage to believe in yourself, because we believe in you. We see you, and we are waiting with breathless anticipation. Jump!

What’s inspiring us
It takes courage to do hard things, new things; to push beyond our comfort zone. That’s why we often turn to those who have come before us for inspiration. Look no further. The Eagle Huntress follows Aisholpan, a 13-year-old girl, as she trains to become the first female in twelve generations of her Kazakh family to become an eagle hunter, and rises to the pinnacle of a tradition that has been handed down from father to son for centuries. Set against the breathtaking expanse of the Mongolian steppe, this beautiful film features some of the most awe-inspiring cinematography ever captured in a documentary. A stunning true story that will have you spellbound.

Girl, Woman, Other, by Bernardine Evaristo, co-winner of The Booker Prize in 2019, follows the lives and struggles of twelve very different characters. Mostly women, black and British, they tell the stories of their families, friends, and lovers, across the country and through the years. This fabulous book teems with life and crackling energy. Most of the 12 narrators are women (one identifies as non- binary) and most are black. The novel is keenly sensitive to the struggles faced by women of colour through the ages. Each of the characters is rich enough to fill a whole book, but the author weaves their stories snugly into a vivid tapestry. We couldn’t put it down.
