How long we get to spend at ‘earth school’ is not up to us. It can be minutes, hours or weeks, but for the majority of us, if we’re lucky, it’s decades. While we are here we have many teachers: our parents, friends, colleagues and mentors, to name just a few. Nature also has a lot to teach us. We learn from animals, plants, oceans, there are lessons everywhere. Just ask anyone who has owned a dog, ridden a horse or surfed an ocean wave. But what about the most important teacher of all? The one we have the hardest time listening to. The one we dismiss; ourselves. Also known as our intuition, it’s that voice that is always whispering to us. The one with all the ideas, or with that one great idea. The voice that keeps saying, “go on, you can do it.” Perhaps it’s time we listened.

Dr. Ebony Butler is a registered psychologist and food relationship strategist. She focuses on helping women heal from trauma and deal with diet and eating disorders. Recognizing that many women could not afford counselling or might be intimidated by it, lead to her newest career as an entrepreneur.
Last year at the beginning of Covid she launched, “My Therapy Cards,” a deck of cards designed to help women of colour grow and elevate in the areas of emotional and mental health. They were so successful that she has now launched a second deck for teens and is also planning on launching a deck for men.
Talking with her was enlightening. We talked about why women of colour have been overlooked in the health field and why having a black therapist is so important. Dr. Butler also shares her own struggles as an entrepreneur and passes on some great advice. It’s an important conversation you won’t want to miss.
Atlantic Crossing is the new Masterpiece series on PBS, also available on Apple. An epic drama based on the true story of the WWII relationship between Franklin Roosevelt and Norwegian Crown Princess Martha. A part of history that few of us probably knew about. When the Nazi’s invaded Norway, Martha was forced to flee to the US with her three small children while her husband and father, the Crown Prince and King, went to England and then back to Norway, to figure out a plan to save their country from destruction. With incredible performances from Sofia Helin as Martha and Harriet Sansom Harris as Eleanor Roosevelt, it’s the kind of compelling, totally absorbing television, that’s a complete joy to watch.
Artificial Immortality, is the opening doc for the Canadian International Hot Docs festival on April 29th. We are very proud to say that it is also produced and directed by one of our members, Ann Shin. If you could create an immortal version of yourself, would you? Until recently, that question was the stuff of science fiction, but now experts in the fields of artificial intelligence and robotics suggest it will be possible. More and more we’re living our lives online, and this film asks the question–what if we transferred ourselves entirely into the digital realm? Is it possible? Is it even desirable? This film explores the latest technological advancements in AI, robotics and biotech, as it explores the essence of being human, and whether it can be replicated. Such an important topic as we have to ask ourselves will AI be the best, or the last thing we ever do?”
This week it’s a two for one special as the amazing Ann Shin has also just released her first novel. Not only is she an extraordinary film maker but she is equally as gifted with the written word. It was inspired by her experience filming her documentary, The Defector, Escape From North Korea. The Last Exiles tells the story of a young couple and their fight for love and freedom in North Korea. We’ve just started reading it and can’t put it down.
