What is the “cost of doing business” these days, and how is it measured? Most of us are working from home, so what has the cost been to our personal life and family relationships? There’s been a lot of discussion about the cost of providing healthcare for employees. What does it cost us personally, and as a society, if we don’t take care of the most vulnerable among us? In your spreadsheet, would you put the last year in the gains or losses column? When it comes to our bottom line, defining our costs depends completely on what we value.

Coded Bias is the thought provoking documentary by Shalini Kantayya. It exposes a serious civil rights issue — the bias built into AI algorithms such as facial recognition technology, particularly against those of us who aren’t like the white men who created it. One might think that a film about algorithms could be a bit dry, but this film is the opposite. It is an absolutely spellbinding look at how artificial intelligence can affect our basic human rights.
Suzanne Simard is the world’s leading forest ecologist. Her work has influenced such films as ‘Avatar’ and her first book, Finding The Mother Tree, is already slated to become a film starring Amy Adams. She gives astonishing evidence that trees, “are social, cooperative creatures connected through underground networks by which trees communicate their vitality and vulnerabilities with communal lives not that different from our own.” So in answer to the question, “If a tree falls in the forest and nobody is around to hear it does it make a sound?”, the answer is “yes”. And, it is followed by the sounds of it’s grieving community.
“I’ve lived the life of not knowing where I was going to end up. I knew how the markets and investing worked because I’d been in the industry for so long, but I quickly learned how to apply this knowledge to real-life when I woke up one morning with the responsibility of my three young children, knowing that their financial well-being was in my hands. I’m passionate about sharing my knowledge of the business and ensuring my clients steer clear of the pitfalls of investing. I get a tremendous amount of pleasure out of helping my clients gain control of their lives financially and ensuring they are on a path to financial security.”
