It seems the last couple of years have been defined by numbers, especially 2020. Every day we watched the news to get the local COVID numbers. How many months until there’s a vaccine? How much time until we reach herd immunity? How many more weeks of lockdown? Even though these are definitely new numbers for our vocabulary, we’ve always been ruled by numbers. Our age, the hours in a day, our weight. Most of us have a lucky number, but numbers can also often have a negative spin on them depending on what you are counting. If it’s dollars, the bigger the better. Your ‘net worth’, so to speak. However, when it comes to age and weight, many of us feel our ‘worth’ goes down as the number goes up. We are defined by the numbers until the end, when our number is finally up. So until then, perhaps what we need to do is choose what we count. And maybe the only thing worth counting, is our blessings.

Originally released in 2012, The Bletchley Circle can now be found on Amazon Prime. Set in London in 1952, it is about four women who worked together as codebreakers in WW2 for the famous Bletchley Park. In this series they come together again to solve a string of murders believed to be the work of one killer. Using their code breaking skills they mark out the pattern of the murders around London, as well as other clues to solve a mystery the police have failed at. It’s a gripping series. It will have you on the edge of your seat, largely due to the performances of the four lead female actresses. Creepy and compelling, it’s must see TV!
A Bump Along The Way was recently released on Apple and received a 100% rating by Rotten Tomatoes. If that wasn’t enough to get our attention it was written, directed and produced by women and it also stars three women. It’s a beautifully nuanced tale about when two unexpectedly become three, and the ripple effect it has in an already complicated relationship between a mother and daughter.
How do we know what we want? How do we know we’re ready to take it? Described as irresistibly unruly and strikingly beautiful, razor-sharp and slyly comic, sexually charged and utterly absorbing, Raven Leilani’s Luster is a portrait of a young woman trying to make sense of her life—her hunger, her anger—in a tumultuous era.
The novel follows the sexual exploits of a young black woman and her involvement with a married man in an open relationship. It deals with the issues that can arise in this kind of situation as well as the sexism and racism that women have to deal with.
It is also a haunting, aching description of how hard it is to believe in your own talent, and the unexpected influences that bring us into ourselves along the way
