true nature

From the east coast to the west we have been experiencing extreme weather patterns. After a record long dry spell, the pacific coast has been engulfed in rain with no end in sight. The east coast is experiencing a second summer that looks like it will continue into November; seducing it’s residents into believing that winter will never come.

Many will point to climate change but we must also remember that Mother Nature is a wiley creature full of dualities and contradictions. These things are reflected in our own individual nature and reminds us that we are not, nor were we ever meant to be, one thing.

With gratitude,

Jessica and Tracy
Did you know that 99% of decisions are made by the subconscious brain? And that changing a key word or phrase can have a huge effect on your bottom line. It’s actually a science and there’s a name for it, “behavioural economics.”

In this podcast we talk with Melina Palmer who is the Founder and CEO of The Brainy Business. The Brainy Business provides behavioral economics consulting to businesses of all sizes from around the world.

In this conversation we take a deep dive into what exactly behavioral economics is, how you can use it to increase sales in your business and why it is essential knowledge for any entrepreneur out there.

Amanda Clark and Kym Hannah are two incredible women who have changed the face of adoption. They are the founders of TEAMworks which is a non profit foundation that seeks to improve and enhance the lives of special needs children locally and internationally.

We first learned of their incredible story when we interviewed Emily Chang last season, the author of The Spare Room. If you haven’t already listened to that podcast we encourage you to check it out. The Spare Room is about creating your own personal legacy and Emily shared a number of powerful stories of women who had done just that. Amanda and Kym’s story in particular was so moving that we asked Emily to connect us with them.

We love this story because it demonstrates we all have the power to impact the lives of others.  It doesn’t matter what it is, in this case it was hundreds of children, but it might be just one child or one person. What we learned is to say YES when something wakes you up or moves you and to just take that first step. And how we all have the power to dramatically change the lives of others.

As the temperature dips and the days become shorter you might be looking for a good book to curl up with. This is it. City of Girls is the new novel by best selling author, Elizabeth Gilbert.  It’s narrated by 89 year old Vivian Morris, who is looking back on her life in the world of “off, off, off” Broadway theatre in New York in the 1940’s. It is about human desire and connection and the events that shape our lives. As Vivian says, “At some point in a woman’s life, she just gets tired of being ashamed all the time. After that, she is free to become whoever she truly is.”  We couldn’t agree more.
We’ve just finished binge watching Maid and can’t say enough good things about it. Based on the memoir Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive by Stephanie Land, the fictionalized version follows the story of a young mother who escapes an abusive relationship, and finds a job cleaning houses. The series is a poignant look at poverty in America as the young mother struggles to make ends meet and faces homelessness. Starring real life mother and daughter actors Margaret Qualley and Andie MacDowell, and shot on beautiful Vancouver Island, this is a series that will stay with you for a long time.
