a winter’s tale

February is a cold-hearted month. With its short days, icy winds, and grey skies, it can feel like the dark night of the year’s soul. That’s why we are more grateful than ever to have so much inspirational content to share with you. It’s also important to remember that this is aways the place from which we begin to rise. Hang in there. Spring is coming.
Love and gratitude,

Networking transformed J. Kelly Hoey’s career, and in the process she became an expert on the subject. Today Kelly is a sought-after keynote speaker, has a podcast on the topic, and recently released the book ‘Build Your Dream Network: Forging Powerful Relationships in a Hyper-Connected World’. Business Insider exclaimed that Build Your Dream Network “completely changed the way I think about networking.”

Many of us struggle in this area, which is why we jumped at the chance to learn from her expertise. Kelly believes that there is no one-size-fits-all formula when it comes to networking but there are a few tips that can make you better at it. She offers a fresh approach to mastering this essential but timeworn skill in a world where “everyone is frantically posting, liking, and friending”, yet too many people are failing to successfully make the lasting and genuine connections their careers need.

This is a fantastic documentary with amazing pictures, footage and insights into one of the most iconic women of the 20th century. Julia Child was an entrepreneur and a trailblazer for both men and women. At 87, when most people of her generation had been retired for two decades,  she signed up to star in a 22-episode TV show. So much to love here, and a reminder that, “it ain’t over till it’s over.”

Directed by Berta Bersholi, The Hive was a triple winner at the Sundance film festival, and received a 100% rating by Rotten Tomatoes. It is the true story of Fahrije Hoti, a woman who was left to try to make ends meet and build a new life after her husband failed to return from the 1999 war in Kosovo. What she endures is unimaginable to most of us, which is why it is also so inspiring.  At its core, “The Hive” is about feminine strength and resilience in a patriarchal society, and the power women have to change their lives, and the world around them when they come together.

Who doesn’t love Emma? In this article published in the Guardian she talks about being sandwiched between two generations of women in her family, and witnessing physically, what that means for all of them.

In this short blog Jessica Wright shares how a chance encounter acted as a reminder to slow down and be grateful.

Deena Kruger is an artist, designer and the CEO of The Creative Company a growing art based brand in Northern Ontario focused on inspiring creativity with their all in one take home products.

Deena discovered her love of painting when she was a teen. However, she didn’t really consider taking it more seriously until her early 30’s when she chose to leave her job in sales, and fully commit to building a career where she could be creative every day. Deena quickly discovered that she has a real passion for business. Taking something from idea to empire has become one of her life’s greatest challenges and joys. Something she feels she was meant to do!

Deena has always believed in living her passions ,whether she is taking time to create, or working on building a legacy that supports artists and inspires people all over the country. She sees herself like her signature birch tree paintings; standing tall, strong, and forever growing, and she puts her full heart into her work and her team.  Her goal is to continue evolving, learning, and striving to create a company that serves many in a positive way.

Deena also recognizes exceptional talent when she sees it. She considers it an honour to be surrounded by such an incredible team of individuals who are all working towards the common goal of being creative, having fun, and inspiring others to follow their passions.

We are grateful for the vision and beauty Deena brings to the She’s on Top community.
